El Hadji Keita
BRISER LES ANNEAUX
Wood, metal, clay
2017

As soon as they enter the exhibit, visitors are faced with this very large sculpture by El Hadji Keita, a sculptor from Saint-Louis, Senegal: an impressive representation made of wood, clay and iron that immediately connects the purpose of the Exile Pavilion with the intimate and collective history of Saint-Louis. Many of El Hadji Keita’s works are inspired by nature and wild animals, sculpted from traditional materials and representing his profound attachment to his roots and to the earth, but here, his art is at the service of a re-appropriation of his personal history as well as that of his city and country.
